The Institute for Conservation Biology at the University of Wollongong, holds a photocompetition every two years for its members. The aim is to have a bit of fun in the otherwise serious business of scientific research. The main stipulation of the competition is that the images entered must be directly related to the research project of the ICB member, so that by holding a public exhibition of these works, we can communicate to the public in an accessible way, some insights into the ongoing scientific research within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Wollongong.

The major prizes were given as funding to help with conference travel.
The main aim is to come up with a stunning visual image.
Each photograph must however have some direct scientific relation to any current ICB research project.
While technical quality will be a factor, how the image illustrates the scientific principles of your research project will also be considered in the judging process.
Each photograph should be accompanied by a 50-100 word text description of how the image is connected to your research project. It should be comprehensible to non scientists.
This year there will be specific categories that can be entered. You should indicate on the entry form which category you are entering each image for. You can enter each image in different categories or all three into one of them.
The categories for 2008 are:
Flight
Up Close
Open (any subject matter)
Select your best images and then download the entry form from this website (see below). Fill in all sections of the entry form and email it to Julie Wright. Then print out the completed form, sign it, and put it and your images into a suitable envelope, write your name and "ICB Photo Competition" on the front and give it to Julie Wright before the closing date.
Images should be submitted as 300 dpi JPEG digital files capable of being printed to at least A4 size.

Rules and Regulations
1. The Competition is open to all current staff students and associates of the Institute of Conservation Biology.
2. Each entrant may submit up to three images which must have been photographed by themselves and must be directly relevant to any current ICB research project. (If you took photographs while helping some other member with their project, this is fine but you must write the text and explain why you took the photograph)
3. Images must be accompanied by a hard copy entry form AND an electronic copy of the form only, both to be sent to Julie Wright.
4. Entries will be shown on the website after the closing date, for voting to occur for a people’s choice prize. The ICB reserves the right to disqualify images that are unsuitable or do not meet the brief of the competition.
5. A panel of internal and external judges will be assembled to judge the major prizewinners. Their decision is final. Entrants may win no more than one prize each.
6. It is a condition of entry that Entrants agree to allow their images be used in the forthcoming exhibition or for any promotional purposes by the ICB. Copyright will remain with the entrant.
7. We reserve the right to edit your accompanying descriptive text if it exceeds 100 words.
8. Entries must not have been entered into the previous ICB photo competition.
