A male southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonina) protects his patch on wind-swept sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island. Bulls grow to almost 7 m in length and can exceed 5 tonnes. They are one of the deepest diving mammals and have been recorded to depths in excess of 1700m!
