Bushfires: destructive brutes or misunderstood romantics?
Luke Collins, PhD Student
Fire - It provokes thoughts of fear and projects images of devastation in the minds of Australians every summer. However, this natural disturbance is critical for the persistence of the Australian biota, playing a key role in many environmental processes, such as the formation of hollows in trees as depicted here. This image confronted me after a long day of field work and suggests there may be a sweeter side to this natural disturbance.
