Antarctic mosses under the ozone hole use different UV-screening strategies to protect themselves against UV radiation. Bryum pseudotriquetrum (top panels) has UV-screens within the cells and bound to the cell walls, whereas Ceratodon purpureus (middle panels) relies largely on cell wall-bound UV-screens. Unfortunately, Schistidium antarctici (bottom), which is native to the Antarctic, has half the total concentration of UV-screens as Bryum or Ceratodon, and is likely to be disadvantaged under continued ozone depletion.
