"Bryophyte with water droplets, Macquarie Island"
Jane Wasley, Honorary Fellow
This image shows water droplets on a bryophyte species on subantarctic Macquarie Island. Bryophytes are a significant vegetation component in this cloudy, wet, cold and windy environment, where the annual 900 mm of precipitation can be expected to fall across more than 300 days of the year and air temperatures oscillate only a few degrees from 5 ºC. The Macquarie Island moss flora includes 84 identified species.
