"Bryo‘fighting’ a fungal infection"
Kate Mullany, Honours Student
nil
Surviving in a frozen, dry, blustery desert can be hard at the best of times but for this Ceratodon purpureus moss leaf found in East Antarctica, a fungal infection makes survival near impossible. Collected as part of a long term study intended to observe Antarctic vegetation in the Windmill Islands region, the amount of dead Bryophytes (including moss and liverwort species) have significantly increased since 2003, an indication of climate change and a call to arms for the conservation of these unique ecosystems.
