Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a fantastic tool for researching landscape-scale processes, but they are far more. In the course of peering at computer maps of NSW forests for weeks on end, I have gained an intimate, if also remote, appreciation of the beauty of the landforms. These are revealed in very different ways by different GIS layers. This image shows the Aspect of a range of parallel ridges in the northern Wollemi National Park.
