Calliphora augur is one of the most abundant blowflies in the Illawarrra during the warm parts of the year. It breeds in animal carcasses of all kinds. Unlike many flies, the females deposit live maggots, rather than eggs. Calliphora augur is a key experimental species in the current work being done on fly biology at UOW. Preserved specimens, such as this adult, form part of a central reference collection that helps document the distribution and seasonal abundance of these important insects.
