The featured anemone is Anthopleura elegantissima. It forms large fission clones of genetically identical polyps that compete intensely for space. Sometimes competition between two clones forms a stable anemone free interclonal boundary but this can be the site of fierce fighting. Our studies have shown that incredibly, these brainless animals display social organization with small heavily armed polyps at interclonal borders being scouts , the next few rows are warriors and the central polyps are large poorly armed reproductives. 'Fights' are conducted using club like fighting tentacles (the white tips are batteries of stinging cells) that produce necrotic scars.
