The titan arum Amorphophallus titanium is native to Sumatra. The flowers are rare, huge (up to 3 m tall) and smell of rotting flesh. The smell is wafted through the rainforest by the plant warming its spadix to release the volatile compounds and we are interested in how plants produce and regulate this heat production. In 2006, a 1 m flower was produced in the Royal Botanical Gardens Sydney. A hole cut into the spadix chamber to enable pollination of the female florets (in red below), also shows the creamy, sterile male florets (above) that are responsible for heat production. Above them (not shown) are fertile male florets that produce pollen.
