The invasive seaweed Caulerpa taxifolia (Vehl) C. Agardh occupies more than 133 sq. km of the Mediterranean, and has now spread to ten estuarine locations in NSW. It has been the focus of Assoc. Prof. Andy Davis's lab. to examine the biology and ecological impacts of this invader. The aquarium industry is an important vector for this alga and it was photographed in the public aquarium at the Monaco Oceanographic Institute, the purported source of the Mediterranean infestation.
