at Hyams Beach Village, Jervis Bay, many specimens of the rare
shrub Grevillea macleayana remain scattered throughout residential
gardens. These garden plants are close (ranging from a few meters
to several 100s of meters) to four stands of plants that occur
in an adjacent national park bushland. Our research suggests that
the garden plants are functioning as a component of the regional
population, as pollen transfer (note the pollen on the pollen presenter
of open flowers) -most likely by birds-links populations separated
by ~2.5km. However, the gardens include plants that have been translocated
from other parts of the species range, nursery propagated individuals
and hybrids. Mating with these plants threatens bushland populations
because of genetic contamination.
