26. This foliose (leafy) lichen is found on the South Island of New Zealand. Lichen is algae and fungus living together in a symbiotic relationship (one that is mutually beneficial). Lichens need to be exposed to sunlight to photosynthesize. The brown ‘cups’ or apothecia are the fruiting bodies of the lichen. Lichens are often a sign of a clean environment.
